Under general supervisions, Spirit Lake Lifeguards ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming environment for all visitors. This role requires constant vigilance, quick response in emergencies, and a commitment to maintaining a secure beach area. Lifeguards must be professional, dependable, and approachable, fostering positive interactions with the public and colleagues.
• Maintain constant surveillance of the beach and swimming area.
• Identify signs of drowning or distress.
• Supervise swimming activities.
• Enforce and ensure adherence to all safety rules, policies, and guidelines consistently.
• Respond immediately to emergencies, provide lifesaving assistance and first aid, including but not limited to, CPR and water rescues as needed.
• Conduct routine equipment checks and ensure necessary safety gear is readily available.
• Warn guests about dangers of disobeying safety rules, policies and guidelines.
• Inspect the beach and water areas for hazards before and during shifts.
• Maintain effective communication and positive interactions with guests and fellow staff.
• Attend all required staff meetings and training sessions.
• Attend all assigned shifts.
• Keep all certifications current and valid.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
• Less than a high school diploma or GED certificate required
• Must be at least 15 years old.
• Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (CPR/First Aid/AED) with deepwater/lake beach caveats (or proof of enrollment in a lifeguard training course with a graduation date of 15 June 2026 or earlier).
• Strong communication skills to effectively interact with guests, staff, and supervisors.
• Ability to follow directions and complete assigned tasks efficiently.
• Ability to be respectful, but assertive in high pressure situations.
• One to two (1-2) years previous lifeguard experience
• High school diploma or GED certificate.
General supervision is provided while performing the normal duties of this job. Work affects the overall efficiency and image of the City on matters of significance.
• Ability to lift and remove individuals from the water in rescue situations.
• Perform all skills required for Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED certifications.
• Ability to remain alert and attentive for extended periods.
• Strong swimming ability and comfort in the water, to include natural lake environment.
• Frequent standing, walking, sitting and swimming; occasional stooping, kneeling, and climbing.
• Must be able to project voice over distance and respond effectively in loud environments.
• Ability to scan the entire beach and water areas with clarity and accuracy.
• Must be prepared to work in varying outdoor conditions typical of a Minnesota summer.
• Exposure to moderate noise levels.
• Exposure to outside environmental conditions, including extreme heat and sun.
• Accrual and use of Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST).
• Provided uniforms and necessary beach equipment.
